We partnered with local artist Jade Meyers to create two I Am New Orleans murals in 2023 to help illustrate and bring to life the neighborhoods, people and culture that make New Orleans so unique.
The murals’ designs were informed by community listening sessions in each neighborhood. Residents of all ages shared what equity means and their aspirations for children and families. This resulted in two unique sketches that beautifully capture the hearts of Gentilly and the Lower 9th Ward.
In March we unveiled the first mural on the exterior of the Norman Mayer Library in Gentilly. The mural stands nearly 30 feet tall and stretches across the library’s four-panel wall that faces Norman Mayer Avenue. The mural embodies common themes we heard during community listening sessions, including unity, diversity and growth. It also pays tribute to the library on the far right panel, where children are shown reading.
The second mural was unveiled in August and lives on the exterior of the Andrew P. Sanchez Multi-Service Center on Fats Domino Avenue in the Lower 9th Ward. Stretching over 60 feet wide, the mural aims to inspire young boys and girls and represents resiliency, community and culture. It depicts children reading and playing basketball, as well as unique elements of New Orleans’ rich history.
Be sure to stop by our murals and share a picture on social media using #IAmNewOrleans.
